  • 鈥淒isability鈥 and 鈥渄isabled鈥 generally describe functional limitations that affect one or more of the major life activities, including walking, lifting, learning and breathing. Various laws define disability differently. Handicap is no longer used – avoid using 鈥渉andicap鈥 and 鈥渉andicapped鈥 when describing a person. Instead, refer to the person鈥檚 specific condition or use 鈥減erson with a disability.鈥 The terms are still widely used and generally acceptable when citing laws, regulations, places or things, such as 鈥渉andicapped parking,鈥 although many prefer the term 鈥渁ccessible parking.鈥 Avoid 鈥渉andicapable鈥 as it will not be understood by many.
