Professor Madden鈥檚 work is an outgrowth of his fascination for the diverse traditions of vessel making across countless cultures that have developed a vessel tradition as expressive and utilitarian medium. Through references to structures of containment which occur in nature, Madden’s work explores the dual role of the vase as both object of contemplation and tool. What captivates Madden鈥檚 attention within these forms is the inherent contradiction of a stable, durable structure to communicate a sense of transition, the dialog of interior expanding against containment. This give and take creates the visual tension, which animates both structure and the space it occupies.
