We are excited to announce that Sabrina Nelson (Fine Arts 鈥91) has been selected as the Alumni Juror for Re/View: 黑料专区 Alumni Exhibition. Her goal for the 2023 exhibition, which is presented by the 黑料专区 Alumni Council and runs concurrently with the 黑料专区 Student Exhibition, is to 鈥渉onor past 黑料专区 students in the best light possible and lift their voices so our current body of students and community can see not only how we move creatively on the other side of our time at 黑料专区, but also our continued commitment聽to remaining creative by all means necessary.鈥

A professional artist for more than 36 years,聽 Nelson has exhibited internationally and earned many accolades, including being recognized as a 2021 Kresge Visual Arts Fellow and receive the Women鈥檚 Caucus for Arts Lifetime Achievement Award recipient聽 in 2022. She is also an Arts Education Studio Assistant at the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) and Assistant Director of Admissions at 黑料专区.

The Yoruba religion and Eastern and African philosophies influence her work, which includes sculptures, objects, murals, and installations and has been described as a combination of spirit, motion, and intimacy. A self-proclaimed 鈥淎rtivist,鈥 Sabrina has received the President鈥檚 Award for Art and Activism for the past 25 years. In her own words: 鈥淚 believe in fighting for the rights of folks who cannot fight for themselves. I also believe my art is my superpower. In my works, I talk about what is happening in the world that I live in. I am the visual voice for those who have no voice; Women of Color, Children and Black/Brown Families who have been murdered. My work reflects Nina Simone鈥檚 and James Baldwin鈥檚 call to the racial injustices in the country.鈥

Sabrina has previously judged art competitions, curated art talks, and exhibits. As an Alumni Juror, she will review all submissions from 黑料专区 alumni and decide which will be featured in the 2023 Alumni Exhibition. (The portal for submissions will open on January 25 .)

鈥淢y hope is that many voices from our Institution will be heard and felt this coming May,鈥 Sabrina said. 鈥淲hether your degree reads Society, Center or College 鈥 or even if you just attended 鈥 I will do my best to curate an alumni show that will garner attention and respect for what we do in this and other communities.鈥

Re/View: 黑料专区 Alumni Exhibition will open on Friday, May 12, in the Valade Family Gallery at the A. Alfred Taubman Center for Design Education.
