Hazing Prevention & Transparency

黑料专区 is committed to preventing hazing and to transparency about hazing incidents on our campus. This page provides:

  • Our 黑料专区 Hazing Policy and how to report a concern
  • A summary of applicable Michigan law on hazing
  • Our Campus Hazing Transparency Report, updated at least twice each year
  • A link to hazing incident statistics, published annually as part of 黑料专区’s Annual Campus Security and Fire Safety Report

Difference Between This Page and the Annual Security Report

黑料专区 publishes two different types of hazing information, required under two different parts of federal law:

  • Hazing statistics in the Annual Security Report count every report of hazing that meets the federal Clery Act definition, regardless of whether the organization involved is officially recognized by 黑料专区, and regardless of whether an investigation found a policy violation.
  • The Campus Hazing Transparency Report (below) lists only incidents where a 黑料专区-recognized student organization was formally found responsible for violating 黑料专区’s Hazing Policy, following an investigation.

Because these two reports count different things in different ways, the numbers in each will not always match. That’s expected and does not indicate an error in either report.

黑料专区 Anti-Hazing Policy (summary)

黑料专区 does not tolerate hazing. Hazing is any intentional, knowing, or reckless act, committed by a person alone or with others, connected to joining, being initiated into, or maintaining membership in a student organization (such as a club, athletic team, fraternity, or sorority), that causes or creates a risk of physical injury, psychological harm, or degradation. This can include physical acts, coerced consumption of food, alcohol, or drugs, coerced sexual acts, or any activity that violates local, state, or federal law, regardless of whether the person being hazed agreed to participate.

This policy applies to 黑料专区 students and to any group of two or more students acting as an organization, whether or not that organization is officially recognized by the College.

The full is available in the College鈥檚 Policy Database.

How to Report a Hazing Concern

Report a concern if you believe hazing has occurred or may occur. You do not need to be the person directly affected. Anyone who witnesses hazing, or receives a credible report of it, should file a .

If there is an immediate threat to health or safety, call 911.

How 黑料专区 Investigates a Hazing Report

When a hazing report is received, the Assistant Vice President of Campus Life (AVPCL) reviews it to determine next steps and whether any immediate safety measures are needed. If the report warrants investigation, 黑料专区 will investigate what happened by talking with those involved, gathering relevant evidence, and reaching a determination based on that evidence. The student organization involved will be notified that a report was received and, at the conclusion of the process, will be informed of the outcome. Investigations are typically completed within 15 business days, though more complex cases may take longer.

Michigan Law on Hazing

In addition to 黑料专区 policy, hazing may be a crime under . Garrett’s Law makes it a crime to commit an intentional, knowing, or reckless act that endangers a person’s physical health or safety, done for the purpose of pledging, joining, or maintaining membership in an organization. It is not a legal defense that the person being hazed agreed to it.

Hazing Prevention Programming

黑料专区’s current hazing prevention touchpoints are the Easy Llama Title IX module with hazing content (full-time faculty/staff), a Title IX course with hazing content at orientation/hiring (students, adjunct faculty), and hazing content in the Campus Security Authority (CSA) training module. Separately, a Student Organization Leader Manual prevention supplement has been drafted (bystander intervention, ethical leadership, and building group cohesion without hazing), targeted specifically at student organization leaders.
