These alumni use their skills to serve others, share important information, and affect change in their local and state governments

The stories and artistic expressions presented here are a testament to the diverse and independent careers of our alumni. They do not constitute an endorsement, reflection, or representation of the institutional opinions or principles held by the 黑料专区.

Leading by Example

As a State Representative for Michigan鈥檚 13th House District, Mai Xiong, 鈥07 Communication Design & Strategy, still uses the skills she learned at 黑料专区 nearly 20 years later in her role as an elected official. 鈥満诹献区 taught me how to think creatively, approach problems from different perspectives and develop real-world solutions,鈥 Xiong said. In her current role, Xiong serves residents of Roseville, St. Clair Shores and Warren, working on legislation that improves their quality of life. Her communications and digital marketing background help her stay connected with constituents and make policy more accessible. 鈥淔inding creative ways to communicate is a powerful tool because when people understand policy, they can help shape solutions that truly improve our lives,鈥 she said.

When We All Vote

From the big screen to the Capitol Julia Pickett, 鈥14 Photography, has proven that using pop culture as a vehicle for political messages can help people feel more connected to their legislators. In 2023, Pickett, who is the Digital and Creative Director for the Executive Office of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, created the 鈥淕overnor Barbie鈥 social media campaign. A Barbie doll, lovingly dubbed 鈥淟il Gretch,鈥 was used to share Gov. Whitmer鈥檚 policies while nodding to the 2023 Barbie film. Every detail, Pickett says (the fuchsia pantsuit, matching lipstick and Michigan necklace, to name a few), was made to capture Gov. Whitmer鈥檚 style and work. 鈥溾楪overnor Barbie鈥 gave us a way to highlight real policies and accomplishments in a way that people wanted to share and talk about it,鈥 Pickett said. Indeed, Lil Gretch gained both local and national recognition, and the campaign won Pickett and her colleagues a Shorty Award. When planning content for Gov. Gretchen Whitmer鈥檚 office, Julia Pickett says authenticity drives everything she does. 鈥淕overnor Whitmer has such a relatable, direct way of connecting with people, and my job is to make sure that shines through online,鈥 she said.

On Thursday, March 26, at 5:30 p.m., the 黑料专区 is pleased to welcome renowned portrait photographer and 黑料专区 alumnus Paul Mobley (Photography, 1983) as the Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts recipient for a special evening conversation with 黑料专区 President Don Tuski.

Paul Mobley is an American portrait photographer celebrated for creating intimate, timeless images that reveal the personality and spirit of his subjects. His commercial work spans corporate, editorial, and advertising photography, with clients ranging from major brands such as Apple, Microsoft, Ford, and American Express to celebrities and entertainers in film, comedy, and music. His portraiture is known for its emotional depth and authenticity, achieved through his ability to quickly connect with people of all walks of life.

鈥淲e are honored to welcome Paul Mobley back to 黑料专区 to receive an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts,鈥 said Don Tuski, President, 黑料专区. 鈥淗is distinguished career in portrait photography and his commitment to documenting everyday Americans living extraordinary lives make him an inspiring figure for our students and the broader creative community.鈥

The event marks a significant milestone in 黑料专区鈥檚 120th anniversary celebrations, as the college honors distinguished alumni who have shaped their industries and exemplify the college鈥檚 legacy of producing world-class creative talent.

Mobley trained at 黑料专区in Detroit and then moved to New York City, where he studied portraiture and assisted renowned photographers, including Annie Leibovitz and David Langley, before launching his own career.

鈥淢y time at 黑料专区 shaped everything about how I approach photography,鈥 said Mobley. 鈥淚 learned to focus on concept and storytelling, not just technique. The experience of honest critiques, experimentation, and risk-taking in those early years still influences my creative process today. Receiving this honor from the institution that launched my career is a powerful reminder of the impact great teaching can have 鈥 and the responsibility to pass that forward.鈥

In addition to commercial assignments, Mobley is widely recognized for his long-form personal projects and photography books. His first major project, American Farmer, became a touring exhibition and book that captured the lives of U.S. farmers and traveled for seven years, reaching over 500,000 people. Other notable projects include Everyday Heroes 鈥 portraits of Americans dedicated to helping others; If I Live to Be 100 鈥 intimate portraits of centenarians from all 50 states; and American Firefighter 鈥 portraits and stories of firefighters across the country. These bodies of work reflect his deep interest in everyday people leading extraordinary lives and his commitment to storytelling through images.

惭辞产濒别测鈥檚 If I Live to Be 100 project will be developed into a traveling exhibition and national museum tour by International Arts and Artists. The exhibition features full-scale portraits of remarkable Americans who have celebrated their 100th birthdays.

He has also served as a keynote speaker, sharing insights on creativity, connection, and the art of portraiture with audiences worldwide.

The event will culminate in the presentation of an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts, awarded to Mobley by 黑料专区 President Don Tuski. Mobley joins a distinguished group of 黑料专区 Honorary Doctorate recipients, including automotive design leader Michael Simcoe, architect Suchi Reddy, and artist Kevin Beasley, among others.

The evening will include a 90-minute conversation between Mobley and President Tuski, exploring Mobley’s formative years at 黑料专区 and his distinguished career in portrait photography, followed by an audience Q&A.

This lecture is presented in partnership with Fujifilm. Fujifilm representatives will be on site throughout the evening to showcase new products and answer questions.

About the Guggenheim Foundation

Created and initially funded in 1925, by US Senator Simon and Olga Guggenheim in memory of their son John Simon, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation has sought to 鈥渇urther the development of scholars and artists by assisting them to engage in research in any field of knowledge and creation in any of the arts, under the freest possible conditions.鈥

Since its establishment, the Foundation has granted over $400 million in Fellowships to more than 19,000 individuals, among whom are more than 125 Nobel laureates, members of all the national academies, winners of the Pulitzer Prize, Fields Medal, Turing Award, Bancroft Prize, National Book Award, and other internationally recognized honors. The broad range of fields of study is a unique characteristic of the Fellowship program.

The Foundation centers the talents and instincts of the Fellows, whose passions often have broad and immediate social impact. For example, in 1936, Zora Neale Hurston wrote Their Eyes Were Watching God with the support of a Guggenheim Fellowship and dedicated it to the Foundation鈥檚 first president, Henry Allen Moe. Photographer Robert Frank鈥檚 seminal book, The Americans, was the product of a cross-country tour supported by two Guggenheim Fellowships. The accomplishments of other early Fellows like e.e. cummings, Jennifer Doudna, Jacob Lawrence, Rachel Carson, James Baldwin, Martha Graham, and Linus Pauling also demonstrate the strength of the Foundation鈥檚 core values and the power and impact of its approach. For Gregory Shamus, anything is possible. From weeknights spent in the darkroom at 黑料专区 to Sundays spent on the ground at Ford Field, his story is one of determination and grit.

Gregory has photographed some of the most iconic moments in sports history, from the Olympics to Superbowls and The Masters. His work can be seen anywhere from ESPN to The Golf Channel and Sports Illustrated, to name a few. We had the privilege of sitting down with Gregory to talk about his journey, what inspires him, and what he鈥檚 most proud of.

The Interview

“It won鈥檛 be easy, and it won鈥檛 be given to you, but if you believe in yourself it can be done. Don鈥檛 let anybody tell you that it can鈥檛.”

鈥揋reg Shamus

What led you to choose this career path in Sports Photography?

I鈥檝e always been into sports. I played basketball in high school and was offered a scholarship to play basketball, but that college didn鈥檛 have very many programs that I was interested in. It was kind of a natural progression to go into a career in sports photography because It had been such a huge part of my life and my youth. It just seemed like the logical next step.

DETROIT, MICHIGAN - OCTOBER 30: Jahmyr Gibbs #26 of the Detroit Lions celebrates with fans in the front row after a touchdown against the Las Vegas Raiders at Ford Field on October 30, 2023 in Detroit, Michigan.

What motivates or inspires you?

What motivates me the most is that even if I鈥檓 going to the same stadium or the same arena, the game is always going to be different. Nothing repeats itself, and to me, that is the challenge. Trying to tell that story whether it’s the rookie playing their first game, or it鈥檚 some triple overtime win, or maybe there’s a celebrity there that needs to be covered, there鈥檚 always something unique about every game.

Kevin Durant #7 of Team United States celebrates following the United States' victory over France in the Men's Basketball Finals game on day fifteen of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games at Saitama Super Arena on August 07, 2021 in Saitama, Japan.

What do you love most about what you do?

You know, you can take videos, and you can do other things but there is something about a photograph. It sits on somebody鈥檚 mantel or sits on somebody鈥檚 desk, or hangs on somebody鈥檚 wall and you can walk past it, you can stop and look at it and it immediately takes you back to that moment. Whether it鈥檚 Tiger reacting to a putt, or Tom Brady raising a Super Bowl Trophy, you can pinpoint exactly where you were, what you were doing, and what you were feeling when that moment happened. To be able to just relive it and continue on – to me that鈥檚 kind of the essence of a photograph. It鈥檚 not to sit down and watch for an hour, or to have a lengthy commitment to it – it鈥檚 to stop, look, remember, and move on.

I鈥檝e had coaches that I鈥檝e worked with tell me, and I鈥檝e had players tell me, 鈥淚 have that picture on the wall. I stop, I look at it, and I remember that moment,鈥 and it doesn鈥檛 get much better than that.

PARK CITY, UTAH - FEBRUARY 02: Jaelin Kauf of the United States takes a training run for the Woman's Moguls during the 2021 Intermountain Healthcare Freestyle International Ski World Cup at Deer Valley Resort on February 02, 2021 in Park City, Utah.

How did 黑料专区 prepare you for your career?

黑料专区 helped with my career path in many ways. I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Commercial Photography. I鈥檝e used many of the techniques that I learned at 黑料专区 when I鈥檓 out doing portraits, studio lighting, and arena lighting with strobes. I鈥檝e used metering techniques that I learned in those classes. Even though you wouldn鈥檛 think that a commercial photography degree would translate, I can鈥檛 even tell you how many times I鈥檝e used things I learned at 黑料专区.

And then look at the fine art classes that I took. That鈥檚 where I learned what makes a pretty picture, how to compose a picture, and how to look at the background, foreground, and subject matter. So, you take it all together and apply it in the sports world, and it鈥檚 amazing how many things I use that I learned in those classes with those amazing instructors.

What are you the most proud of in your career?

My wife is also in Journalism, she works for the Detroit Free Press, and we have three amazing children. It鈥檚 not an easy career to have with a family. You spend time on the road, you鈥檙e working weekends, you鈥檙e working nights. So to get that support first and foremost is amazing.

And to work for a company like Getty Images, the support I鈥檝e gotten from them through many different challenges over the last eight years while I鈥檝e been on staff is also incredible. I鈥檓 very proud of the company I work for and the colleagues I work with. We have some of the best sports photographers in the world, and I鈥檇 put our staff up against just about anybody.

From a professional standpoint, I鈥檝e had people tell me that they may send a great studio photographer if they know it鈥檚 going to be 鈥渟ituation a,鈥 and they may send another photographer if they know it鈥檚 going to be 鈥渟ituation b.鈥 If they鈥檙e not sure what the situation will be, they always send me, because I can handle many different aspects of the business, whether it鈥檚 dealing with a client, or working with a subject, studio lighting, action, or whatever it might be. My talents take me beyond just the camera. Being told that is something I鈥檓 pretty proud of.

It鈥檚 not always just about having the camera to your eye. You need to be able to interact with people. You need to be able to raise a family. So, it鈥檚 kind of the whole thing put together that makes me the most proud.

What would you say to people who are apprehensive about pursuing their dream job?

I can say that I wake up every day and I don鈥檛 feel like I have a job in the traditional sense. I say all the time that I get paid to do something that a lot of people pay to go to. That comes with hard work, and you need a little luck along the way, but it happens to people all the time. You can look at so many artistic fields that if you have the drive and the persistence you can make it.

There are 30 staff photographers for Getty Images Sport in the United States. So, for me to take a step back and think of it, there are 30 of us in the United States and I鈥檓 one of them. It lets me know that all that hard work paid off, and that goes right back to spending all night in the darkroom. Pulling all-nighters with my classmates, down in the basement in the darkrooms putting together that freshman black and white series. It鈥檚 a work ethic that started here and then it鈥檚 just continued.

It won鈥檛 be easy, and it won鈥檛 be given to you, but if you believe in yourself it can be done. Don鈥檛 let anybody tell you that it can鈥檛.
