For most animators, working on a Star Wars series is the ultimate dream. And for 黑料专区 Assistant Professor of Illustration, Betsy Bauer it鈥檚 a box she can check. Currently working as a color script supervisor at Wild Canary Animation, a sub-contractor of Disney’s Lucasfilm, Bauer also splits her time as a full-time faculty member of the Illustration department at 黑料专区. 鈥淲orking on a property like Star Wars is a huge privilege! I鈥檓 truly honored to be working on a canon show.鈥澨 With a career working at some of the biggest names in the animation industry such as Disney, Dreamworks, Penguin Books, Paramount, Sony, Nickelodeon, Mattel and Google 鈥 she still finds some of her greatest fulfillment in teaching.听

鈥淚t sounds cheesy, but my genuine favorite thing about teaching is giving back to the next generation of students. I grew up in the Midwest, and many people thought I was really foolish for pursuing a career in the entertainment industry. When I was in school, I would have loved to have had a professor who was doing the exact work I wanted to be doing. I think serving as an example and helping shine light on the path to make that dream come true for others is the most fulfilling work I鈥檝e ever done.鈥

In 2019, Betsy was booked as a guest speaker at 黑料专区 and then applied to an open faculty position. She credits those early experiences as leaving her with a strong connection to the 黑料专区 community. That positive impression has carried into her passion for developing coursework that resonates with students.听 鈥淢y favorite class to teach is Intro to Visual Development.鈥 Betsy explains that she developed this course during her first year teaching at 黑料专区 and feels it has streamlined into its most effective version. 鈥淭he great part of that class is that students not only get an overview into what it means to create design work for an animation studio but they also each leave with a portfolio project they can use for future opportunities.鈥 When you ask her how she manages to juggle working two full-time jobs on opposite sides of the country, she explains that she believes each role feeds the other. 鈥淲orking with students and seeing their excitement about the work really does remind me of how exciting this truly is, and it keeps me from taking my studio opportunity for granted.鈥

And while Betsy feels lucky to be teaching at 黑料专区, the College is grateful she is a part of the 黑料专区 family. Tim Flattery, Provost, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Chief Academic Officer applauds Bauer鈥檚 skill and inside knowledge of the industry. 鈥淏etsy is an incredible and unique professor at 黑料专区. Her experience as a VisDev Artist and Art Director in the animation industry brings students current and valuable expertise in all areas of instruction. Her insight strengthens the curriculum and experiential learning for the College as a whole and within the Illustration department.鈥澨

Outside of work, you will find Betsy spending time outdoors, cooking and being a professional photographer of her two dogs 鈥 all fueling her creative ability to bring emotive animated characters to life.听 To learn more about 黑料专区鈥檚 Illustration department please visit /academics/undergraduate-programs/illustration/.

]]>

For the past 20 years, American Chemistry Council has partnered with 黑料专区 (黑料专区) in educational design studios. These sponsored projects have allowed countless 黑料专区 students the opportunity to participate in creative, research-based assignments within real-world design parameters, all while interacting with American Chemistry Council experts.

鈥淥ur longstanding partnership with 黑料专区 has helped forge a new era in transportation design focused on eliminating plastic waste in the environment,鈥 Gina Oliver, Senior Director Durable Markets Advocacy at American Chemistry Council said. 鈥ACC鈥檚 vision for sustainability听is at the core of everything ACC and our members stand for and together through our work with 黑料专区 and the automotive industry, we are working to create the innovative sustainable materials necessary for a circular automotive industry. This transformative industry change must begin first and foremost with automotive design. 黑料专区 is a preeminent school in transportation design and for the past 20 years, its students have been a huge part of the sustainable future that ACC and its members are working to achieve in this industry. These visionary budding automotive designers are truly the future of automotive sustainability and circularity.鈥

Founded in 1872, American Chemistry Council (ACC) is an industry trade association for American chemical companies, based in Washington, D.C. ACC represents more than 190 companies engaged in the business of chemistry, advocating for the people, policy and products of chemistry that make the United States the global leader in innovation and manufacturing.听

In the most recent sponsored studio this past fall, undergraduate and graduate Transportation Design students designed an electric vehicle for the year 2050. Designs were required to feature plastics and polymer composite solutions that demonstrate a fully circular economy from design through end-of-life. Students also had to articulate the benefits and enabling technologies that contributed to the sustainable materials chosen for their design.听

At the final presentation, students showcased innovative designs tackling future mobility, deconstruction and sustainability challenges.

Oliver believed the final student designs were at a top level. 鈥淭hese young designers embraced the recognition that in order to keep automotive durable materials out of our environment at end-of-life, we need to make sweeping industry changes that begin first and foremost at the point of design. This year鈥檚 project outcomes were nothing short of incredible 鈥 honestly the best in our 20 years with 黑料专区. These talented designers are the key to a low-carbon, circular automotive industry future.鈥

Graduate Transportation Design student Arturo Barrera Rodriguez presented UMobi, a mobility infrastructure system that included a two-seater electric vehicle connected to the UMobi recycling system. A standout selection of unusual sustainable materials 鈥揵iodegraded carrots and recycled carbon fiber鈥 showed Barrera Rodriguez鈥檚 depth of research and application. He also created a digital cataloging system of each component of the UMobi system using a coding system where individual components of the vehicle could be scanned at the disassembly plant with a material make-up list. This will allow individual materials to be easily disassembled and sorted for recycling.听

Undergraduate Transportation Design student Benjamin Pollitz introduced his final project, 颁颈迟谤辞毛苍, a compact truck made with sustainable plastic construction. The electric truck is designed to transport goods and supplies between population centers and communities at their outskirts. The design included advanced recycling technology 鈥揳n enzyme-based process that breaks down petroleum-based plastics into monomers鈥 resulting in components that can then be used to make new virgin plastics.听

Shannon McPartlon, Executive Director of the Office of Partnerships at 黑料专区 is grateful for the long-standing partnership with American Chemistry Council Plastics Division. 鈥淭heir commitment to nurturing and supporting the next generation of designers is truly remarkable. Over the past two decades, we have worked closely with ACC to shape a shared vision for classroom projects, creating an inspiring environment where students are encouraged to explore material innovations. This partnership has consistently challenged students to envision a better future for all through their creative designs within the transportation industry.鈥

During the fall semester, 黑料专区 Communication Design students collaborated with InsideOut Literary Arts on a project sponsored by Mercedes-Benz Financial Services (MBFS). Paramount to the nonprofit鈥檚 goal is the conviction to lift every unique and collective voice through transformative creative writing programs.听

Founded in 1995, InsideOut is Detroit鈥檚 largest and oldest literary nonprofit organization. Reaching more than 100 classrooms and community sites, the nonprofit brings together professional writers to inspire Detroit elementary, middle school and high school students to find their unique voice through the written and spoken word.听

Communication Design students developed design strategies for a student poetry publication centered around the theme of nature and in celebration of InsideOut鈥檚 community impact. The final results were a culmination of research on ecology, poetry and climate justice. Students also created taxonomy systems based on their theme and detailed data visualization charts to lay out each section of their book. The themes ranged from a modern almanac of poetry inspired by the four seasons to an immersive emotional journey featuring nature-inspired poetry.

One group of students was selected to have their book professionally printed and published. The winning group composed of Sophie Boysen, Libby Grace and Sam Mantua chose to focus on the intersection of human interaction with nature. Their concept statement described their theme as:听

鈥淒iverse in their size, settings and hues, ecosystems serve as the framework for our publication. Within these poetic narratives, you鈥檒l traverse from home to the grand听expanses of the Earth, experiencing the full spectrum of human interaction with nature.鈥

Susan LaPorte, Chair and Professor of Communication Design + Advertising Departments believes sponsored projects are critical to developing a well-rounded student educational experience at 黑料专区. 鈥淢aking connections between our community partners is an important aspect of design education. For our student teams, it is the chance to work on an applied design brief, with clients in our classrooms. Through this journey with our partners, InsideOut and MBFS, we learned how to work collaboratively, shared our design creative process, presented our steps and stages, responded to critical dialogue, and produced four distinctive and exemplary poetry books.鈥

THE COLLEGE FOR CREATIVE STUDIES鈥 GRADUATE TRANSPORTATION DESIGN 鈥 A PROGRAM FOR VISIONARIES /news/the-college-for-creative-studies-graduate-transportation-design-a-program-for-visionaries/ Wed, 01 Nov 2023 08:46:15 +0000 /?p=34150 Discover why the 黑料专区 Graduate Transportation Design program boasts a 100% job placement rate. Located in Detroit, we empower visionaries to lead the future of mobility.

The post THE COLLEGE FOR CREATIVE STUDIES鈥 GRADUATE TRANSPORTATION DESIGN 鈥 A PROGRAM FOR VISIONARIES appeared first on 黑料专区.

]]>

Record enrollment, high job placement, and international awards have the 黑料专区鈥 Graduate Transportation Design program reaching new heights.

For the past fourteen years, 黑料专区 has housed one of the only Graduate Transportation Design programs in the country. The College is no stranger to teaching automotive design 鈥 in fact, its undergraduate Transportation Design program has been around for 60+ years and 黑料专区 alumni can be found in the design departments of almost every major auto manufacturer and nearly all the tier 1 auto suppliers.

If you ask Chair of the Graduate Transportation Design program, Raphael Zammit, what best embodies the program鈥檚 learning objectives he will point to the thesis project. 鈥淒epth of inquiry, research, concept development, resolution of complex system integrations, and conceptual storytelling are all just the baseline of what every thesis student has to master.鈥 He explains, 鈥渢he core vision of the program is to equip bright students from all over the world with the ability to both imagine and realize the most spectacular of mobility scenarios (vehicles, systems, experiences, stories).鈥

The thesis projects showcase this sentiment of breadth and depth of study in the development of truly novel solutions that advance the field of mobility. This year鈥檚 graduate thesis projects explored a wide range of original concepts from economic and environmentally sustainable tourism, to all-terrain mobile medical clinics, to inflatable rescue drones for severe urban flooding.

A core strength underlying both graduate and undergraduate Transportation Design programs is 黑料专区鈥檚 location. Where else would a more well-suited location for a transportation design program be than the Motor City itself?

Recent graduate Ziheng Zhang, 鈥23 MFA Transportation Design, relocated from China to attend this program and is now working for General Motors as a Creative Designer in its China Advance Studio.

鈥淚 think 黑料专区 is an unavoidable school for students who want to study transportation design, and being located in Detroit gives students here more exposure to GM, Ford and Stellantis. Most importantly, for me, who had just graduated from college with basic knowledge of design, but was completely new to transportation design, the curriculum here was very much what I needed.鈥

The 黑料专区 Transportation Design studios are housed in the building where GM鈥檚 first automotive design studio was born – the very place where GM鈥檚 first head of design, Harley Earl, and other pioneers created groundbreaking vehicles that launched the field of modern automotive design. Today, industry leaders in the mobility sector and beyond come here from around the world to seek top talent. Design competitions, internships, and industry sponsored projects have opened doors for graduate placement at nearly every major vehicle manufacturer and supplier globally. Zammit believes there鈥檚 no question being located in Detroit is an advantage.

鈥淥ur proximity to the largest United States Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) gives us a huge pool of amazing designers to teach and mentor our students. In addition, Detroit is a special place. Its legacy for design innovation is in its DNA. It鈥檚 not only historically acknowledged – it鈥檚 alive and well today and expanding as the city itself continues to transform and grow.鈥

The spirit of exploration, creativity and connection also brought Nicholas Molina, 鈥23 MFA Transportation Design, to move from Italy to the U.S. to attend this program.听 Molina is currently working as an exterior design intern at Fisker Inc.

鈥淲hat I liked about the masters program at 黑料专区 was the curriculum, the history of 黑料专区 in car design, and the amazing work from the recent graduates at the time from the masters program. Being able to have classes with amazing professionals that are active in the industry, learning from them, sharing a space to be creative was very inspiring to me. Having such great connections with the Detroit auto industry and the rest world, along with the incredible sponsored studios, gives students all the tools needed to be competitive in a very difficult market.鈥

With numbers like a 100% job placement rate for the 2022 graduating class, and alumni working both locally (Stellantis, Ford, GM, Yangfeng) and abroad (GAC, NIO, Volvo, Polaris, BRP to name a few) 鈥 the STEM-designated program is making a name for itself. Students have been internationally recognized with two Car Design News Magna Bold Global Perspective awards, one silver and two bronze level Creative Conscious awards and a 2023 BRP finalist award 鈥 all within the past three years. The program has caught the attention of companies like Tesla, Honda, Mazda, Mercedes and 3M, with internships and sponsored studios.听

Zammit鈥檚 passion for this program and how much he learns from teaching these students is undeniable. Building a creative environment that focuses on staying agile in an ever-changing field of mobility, while also maintaining the core foundation of critical thinking and creative mastery is at the heart of the program. And the inspiration he receives in return from the students and their perspectives is what fuels him to continue as chair of the program. 鈥淢y true hope is that 黑料专区 Graduate Transportation Design is simply known as the place where anything is possible – where dreamers learn how to realize their visions no matter how challenging they might seem. This process is truly inspiring and endlessly rewarding for me.鈥

Learn how we are setting the standard for responsible AI usage in art and design.

The post The 黑料专区 Leads With Institution-Wide Artificial Intelligence Policy appeared first on 黑料专区.

]]>

Rapidly developing artificial intelligence (AI) technology is bringing to light serious concerns within the art and design industry. The integration of this technology 鈥 that has advancement capabilities beyond anything anyone has ever seen 鈥 is pushing art and design colleges to assess responsible technology usage within their schools. As an early adopter of AI as a resource tool, the 黑料专区 (黑料专区) is the first AICAD (the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design) college in the United States to fully develop and implement an institution-wide 听

Tim Flattery, Provost, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Chief Academic Officer and Director of the Concept Design department, describes AI as 鈥渟o polarizing in regards to how it pillages from other artists and writers. It also allows the user to arrive straight to a final output without committing to the journey. This circumvents what we do in education completely. Learning and mastering the proper skill sets as an artist, designer and writer are paramount.鈥

With a storied career spanning over 35 years in the entertainment industry as a Hollywood concept artist and designer, Flattery has weathered many advancements in technology in the art and design industry. He quickly recognized the need to adapt and implement guardrails for AI usage so that students and faculty have the ability to use AI as a process tool, but can continue to produce original high quality art and design work. When Flattery approached leadership about this need, the College did not shirk away from the task at hand.听听

Over the course of one year, 黑料专区 systematically researched, surveyed and crafted a robust plan for broadscale AI usage. What began as an AI task force of faculty, staff, students and department chairs formed by Flattery, soon morphed into surveying the entire college (and liaising with industry partners) resulting in an institutional statement that reflected all voices and disciplines.听

Members of the working group addressed AI use in the classroom, academic integrity and AI integration into final work. Paul Snyder, Chair of the Transportation Design department and AI working group member believes the new policy will enhance the student experience at 黑料专区. 鈥An AI policy offers guidance to faculty and students by establishing guidelines to stay within, ensuring students continue to get the most of their respective departmental programs while being aware of trends in technology they will have at their disposal after graduation.鈥

Furthermore, recognizing both the challenges and benefits of AI systems and how these differ by discipline, the College looked to the program Chairs to develop program-specific AI utilization guidelines for their department鈥檚 curriculum. Becca Pad, Library Director and Co-Chair of the Artificial Intelligence working group is proud of the synergy such a dynamic group was able to achieve in a short period of time. 鈥淭he outputs from the workgroup will help guide students, faculty, and staff into a new era of art and design education,鈥 she said.听听听

As a community of working artists and designers, the working group developed the following key points within the policy to safeguard the intellectual property of student artists and designers. Recognizing the importance that students develop strong foundational skills, appropriate usage, as defined below, is critical.听

This is a living document in order to adapt to the ongoing evolution and polarizing concerns of all generative platforms.听

What is considered 鈥渁ppropriate usage鈥?

  1. Approval by instruction in conjunction with department guidelines 鈥 AI results should not be included in final outputs or deliverables.
  2. Students must cite systems and document relevant prompts used in process and research.
  3. Unless specifically approved, it is prohibited to use names of artists/designers, companies or brands in prompts.
  4. Equity in access to AI systems must be assured by the instructor.
  5. Admissions Guidelines: The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools can only be used for process and research and may not be used as a final image(s) for admissions purposes. You may not use artists鈥 names within your prompt(s) and you must cite the prompts and platforms used. There is a limit of 1 piece created using AI tools allowed in the application portfolio.听

Ashlei Watson, Director of Academic Planning and Effectiveness and also Co-Chair of the Artificial Intelligence working group is looking to the future and the working group鈥檚 commitment to continuing the discourse on responsible AI usage. 鈥淚n the coming academic year, the working group will continue to discuss the use of AI as a creative tool with students, faculty and staff in town hall forums. We will also develop a list of AI tools for institution-level subscriptions.鈥 Watson believes continued vigilance in assessing the effectiveness of the policy will be key.

Flattery acknowledges the institutional policy created by the College will have to adjust as artificial intelligence technology continues to advance. 鈥淭his is a living document – one designed to be adapted as Artificial Intelligence continues to evolve,鈥 Flattery said.听

And although the policy itself may change, he believes 鈥渋t will enforce the use of AI as a tool for process only. It enforces responsible use and ensures respect for other artists鈥 intellectual property.鈥澨

To prepare students for these changes and guidelines, students will also receive a theoretical introduction to artificial intelligence through a required Digital Techniques course. The College believes first-year student exposure to AI allows students to be digitally literate and understand the changing landscape early in their tenure at 黑料专区.听

鈥淚t’s imperative for the College to have an AI policy because AI is staged to have an enormous impact on visual culture globally,鈥 Snyder said. 鈥淎s well as all other forms of culture. The discourse around AI has already challenged our accepted notions of creativity and the human capacity for genius, so any institution involved in the production of culture must address it critically.鈥
